In 1916, MIT built an on-site steam and electrical power plant to serve its new campus. A state-of-the-art facility for that era, the plant represented MIT’s commitment to cleaner, more efficient generation of energy. A century later, MIT continues to pursue an energy strategy that supports human health and sustainability.

A key strength of the upgraded on-campus cogeneration system is that it will serve as a bridge to future energy technologies and equipment. Flexible in its design and adaptable to change, the system will enable MIT to incorporate innovations as they emerge, improving plant efficiency and optimizing operations. As the 21st century unfolds, MIT will continue to build campus sustainability – and will pursue new energy solutions through research. Our energy strategy will evolve, and the CUP will continue to evolve as well.
